Come stay with us in the Catskills! Instant family + your completed video project.
July 20-24. Cost: $450.00 for shared lodging / $575.00 for single

Shoot from the Hip is an improvisational filmmaking intensive hosted by the Catskill Mountain Foundation. Exploring film through intensive instruction in improvisation, story development, directing, cinematography, sound, and editing, each student will gain practical filmmaking skills, complete their own digital film short, and collaborate on the films of other students.

As a part of the closing night celebration, student films will be given their first screening at the Doctorow Center for the Arts at the Catskill Mountain Foundation. No experience necessary.

Tuition includes either shared or separate lodging at the Sugar Maples Center for Creative Arts in the hamlet of Maplecrest, New York. The Sherwood House Hotel features brand new construction, cable TV in each room, and private bathrooms. The hotel will also house the video editing center. A small kitchenette is available in the common area. With hiking trails and the waters of the  creek nearby, students will enjoy comfortable and picturesque accommodations during the program.

"This was a dream come true. I came in knowing very little about making a film. With faculty guidance, I overcame all of that. In just a matter of days, I was working with cameras, directing scenes, holding boom mikes, and assisting with production behind-the-scenes. To top that off, we edited our movie with the same software Hollywood uses, Final Cut Pro. I wanted a low-risk, high-reward way to get exposed to the film-making process and I got it."

"Shoot from the Hip was one of the most powerful creative
and learning experiences of my life. Working as both a performance ensemble and production crew, we got to sample every role by collaborating on story development, rotating production positions, performing, and editing. Movie
production puts the "intense" in "intensive," but the professionalism of the faculty and producer Jen
Sanders was astounding, as was their warmth, enthusiasm, and humor. After coming down from the Catskills, many of
us felt like soldiers returning in victory: stronger, wiser, profoundly changed within, sharing an invisible bond with
our comrades from the trenches."
